Mr. Norbert “Nubs” M. Schactner, 87, of Galesburg, Illinois died 12:00 noon Saturday, September 19, 2020 at his home. 

He was born August 10, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to Herbert and Florence (Willmot) Schactner.  He married Letitia Luther, the love of his life for 64 years, September 2, 1956 in Pontiac, Illinois.  She survives. 

Also surviving are two daughters, Lynn (and Jack) Johnson of Dahinda, Illinois and Jill Frank of Peoria, Illinois and three granddaughters, Nichole Johnson of Chicago, Amy Frank of Bloomington, Illinois, and Natalie (and Jacob) Thompson of Galesburg.  He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lloyd Schactner. 

Nubs graduated from Joliet High School in 1951 and attended Knox College in Galesburg.  He served in the United States Army for two years.  He was the business manager at Galesburg Cottage Hospital from 1960 to 1964.  He opened and was the business manager for Americana Nursing Home in Galesburg from 1964 to 1966 and is now named Heartland Health Care Center.  He owned and operated A-1 Ambulance for 12 years.  He was the business manager for Galesburg Mental Health Center and Henry C. Hill Corrections.  He later held several positions at the Secretary of State.  He was the president for the Hospital Credit Managers Association of Illinois.  He was a member of Galesburg Jaycees Club, Knox Fifty Year Club and Antique Boat Club.  He was president and staff director of the Galesburg Exchange Club and president of the Lincoln Continental Care Club for three years.  He also volunteered for the Knox-Galesburg Symphony by helping with fund raising.  He received the Rotary’s Paul Harris award.  He received many awards for his 1977, 1978 and 1940 Lincoln show/collector cars.  Nubs had a lifelong love for Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.  He spent several summers with his family at the lake.  He would also work on boats for boat companies and helped take docks and piers out of the water in the fall. 

As Nubs requested, cremation will be accorded.  Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 25, 2020 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel.  A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel with Rev. Bob Clark officiating.  Due to guidelines associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and facemasks will be required with limited seating.   Private committal service will be at East Linwood Cemetery Scattering Garden, Galesburg.  Memorials may be made to Knox Fifty Year Club or Guardian Angel Humane Society.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
