The Warren County Chair of the Democratic Party, Steve Buban wants to encourage voters to pass the graduated income tax in November. Buban says there 2 items that need to be cleared up:
“The ads are flying all over the place. Two things I want to say about it. Just to be really clear, one narrative is it will tax retirement, which Illinois does not do. That is clearly, clearly, clearly not the case. It will not tax retirement. To tax retirement would require another constitutional amendment. Will it lead to the taxing requirement? Possibly, but I don’t see how. It seems to me if we don’t and the state need revenue. Yes they waste revenue, but they need revenue and they are going to get it somehow. This is the best way in my opinion and the fairest way to get it. They are going to have to try and go after retirement if they can’t get it this way. To me, ironically, retirement is more protected if this passes,” Buban states.
The second item refers to the legislators changing the taxing tiers and the rates in the future. Buban says the legislature can change the tax rates right now. He says If the State cannot increase the revenue through the graduated income tax, then they may look at raising taxes in a different way.
