“Here in Illinois, farmers are the backbone of our economy and play a crucial role in keeping our country moving […] I’m honored to win this award for the fourth time.”
In case you missed it, last week Congresswoman Cheri Bustos joined farmers from across Northwest and Central Illinois to accept the Illinois Farm Bureau’s endorsement, the Illinois Agricultural Association ACTIVATOR® Friend of Agriculture Award. The award recognizes elected officials fighting for Illinois farmers.

Representative Bustos accepted the award at Marty McManus’ Family Farm. Adam Nielsen, Director of National Legislation & Policy Development for the Illinois Farm Bureau, and Mike Zecher, President of the Mercer County Farm Bureau, both presented the award.
Nielsen and Zecher cited Representative Bustos’ tireless commitment to Illinois farmers. Specifically, they noted her work introducing the Rural Green Partnership, which works to bring rural America into the climate change discussion and create a more sustainable future for Illinois farmers and families; facilitating a meeting between the Speaker of the House and Illinois Farm Bureau President Richard Guebert during negotiations for the United States, Mexico and Canada Agreement (USMCA); and, standing up for biofuel and ethanol producers in Illinois.

“My family’s roots are in farming,” said Congresswoman Bustos. “So I know firsthand that here in Illinois, farmers are the backbone of our economy and play a crucial role in keeping our country moving. I was particularly proud to fight in Congress to negotiate a strong USMCA agreement, and continue to advocate to make sure farmers have a seat at the table no matter the topic, including on issues like broadband access, our changing climate and our COVID-19 recovery. I’m honored to win this award for the fourth time and thank Farm Bureau for their continued support.”
Now in her fourth term representing Illinois’ 17th Congressional District Congresswoman Cheri Bustos is a leader in the fight to lower health care costs, rebuild our region’s infrastructure, help Illinoisans weather the COVID-19 pandemic and work to safely reopen, and deliver real results for hardworking families across Northwest and Central Illinois.
