Over the next two weekends at the Fusion Theater, the Monmouth College theater department will display their first full-length production in-person and virtually of the 2020-2021 theater season. Professor Doug Rankin will be directing ‘An Enemy of the People’ by Arthur Miller, which he says is based on how 1882 compares to 2020:
“Just socially things have changed a lot as far as the church was much more important to the majority of people. The social and political aspects are very similar in that commerce was very important like it is today and when there is something that gets in the way of commerce, it causes a controversy. That is what this show is about, the morality of putting money over safety and that type of thing. The other thing that really kind of struck me about this history is Kirkwood, Illinois in 1882 built a health spa on some mineral springs and that’s what this show is about, building a health spa on mineral springs in the same year as they did in Kirkwood,” Rankin shares.
‘An Enemy of the People’ will open on Friday, October 23rd at 7:30 pm with performances to follow on Sunday, October 25th at 2pm, Thursday, October 29th at 7:30 and the final showing at 2 pm on Saturday, October 31st. The Tin Cup will also be open during all four performances for concessions as none will be served at the theater.
