Monmouth College to be Featured as Midwest Conference Celebrates Centennial Year

Monmouth College will be featured next month as part of the Midwest Conference’s 100th Anniversary Celebration.

Three years after the Midwest Conference was established in 1921, Monmouth joined the league and is now its fifth-longest continuing member. The Fighting Scots’ athletic history will be featured on the MWC website on Nov. 13 and the story of the Fighting Scots nickname will take center stage on Nov. 18.

Next spring, the MWC will recognize the top 100 student-athletes from the past 100 years, non-inclusive of those with athletic eligibility remaining. The honorees will include both men and women. Each of the MWC’s current and former members – 15 total institutions – are eligible to submit nominees based on their years of conference affiliation.

Since joining the league in 1924, Monmouth has won 157 conference team titles and produced 12 national champions. At the end of the MWC’s championship schedule, the league awards the All-Sports Championship, which is determined by a system that awards points based on each school’s standing in each of the conference’s recognized sports. The Scots’ men have won the award seven times and the women twice.

The modern-era Midwest Conference was created in the spring of 1994 with the merger of the Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC), which had been sponsoring men’s championships since 1921, and the Midwest Athletic Conference for Women (MACW), which was formed to conduct women’s championship competition in 1977. The intent of the union was to preserve the tradition of both leagues while enhancing administration efficiency and fostering equity between men and women’s sports.

A full history of the Midwest Conference may be found on the league’s website at MidwestConference.org.
