Alice Alene Herren

Alice Alene Herren, 85, formerly of Galesburg and Abingdon, passed away at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville.

  She was born May 22, 1935 in Schuyler County, Illinois, the daughter of Loren and Gladys (Freiley) Herren.  She married Anton Grabill and later married Bob Anderson.

  Alene is survived by four daughters, Terrie (Kevin) Lange of Mesa, Arizona, Kathy (Jack) Fisher of Knoxville, Sharon (Bob) Scanlon of Sarasota, Florida and Toni Springer of San Francisco, California; 7 grandchildren ,11 great-grandchildren (and one on the way) and 1 great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Roger Herren of Wentzville, Missouri.

  She was preceded in death by her parents one brother, Virgel Herren, one sister, Mary Spurlock, one son-in-law, Jack Fisher and a stepbrother, Loren Lee Herren.

  She graduated from Abingdon High School in 1953 and later attended Brown’s Business College and Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg.  She worked in retail and was the manager of Domestics department of the former Arlan’s Department Store in Galesburg and later at the May D & F Department Store in Denver.  She later operated a craft business until 2008 and set up and sold her crafts at many of the area scenic drives.  She was also an avid jogger, doing so into her 60’s.  She was of the Baptist Faith

  Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, a private service will be held Saturday, November 21, 2020 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel.  Rev. Mary Runge will officiate.  Those wishing to attend the funeral “virtually” may watch the live broadcast at 1 p.m. Saturday on the funeral home’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Hinchliff-Pearson-West-Funeral-Directors-and-Cremation-Services-160333664037824.  Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.   

  Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice in care of Kathy Fisher, 211 W. Main St., Knoxville, IL 61448.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
