The Monmouth Fire Department would like to announce their participation in the “Keep the Wreath Red” campaign. Each year the Monmouth Fire Department hangs a wreath on the front of the fire station decorated with all red lights. Each time that there is a residential structure fire in the community, a red light is changed to white. This campaign is to promote awareness to the public about the dangers of home fires around the holidays. During the holiday season, Christmas trees, cooking, candles, and electrical decorations all contribute to the increased danger of fires in the home. These are in addition to the already heightened risk of fires caused by heating equipment. Cooking continues to be the leading cause of residential fires year-round but the risk is especially high around Christmas day when people are preparing meals for friends and family events. Heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the United States with space heaters being the cause in most cases. The Monmouth Fire Department would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and remember to check your smoke alarms monthly.
