Western Illinois Women’s Basketball: Leathernecks Drop Pair of Games at Compass Challenge

The Western Illinois University women’s basketball team lost both of their games in the Compass Challenge at Charleston, Illinois this weekend to fall to (0-3) on the season. Despite a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds by Evan Zars, the Leathernecks fell to Northern Illinois 79-67 to Northern Illinois on Saturday. Western started the contest on a 10-0 run, however, the Huskies would hit 13 three-pointers in the game to get the victory. After missing the season opener, Western’s Carla Flores ended 3-3 from behind the arc for 11 points. Danni Nichols added her second straight 12 point performance.

Elizabeth Lutz and Anna Deets combined for 29 points off the bench for Western Illinois in a 88-74 loss to Eastern Illinois on Sunday. Lutz tossed in a team-high 16 while Deets scored a career-high 13, finishing 3-5 behind the arc and a perfect 4-4 at the free-throw line. Western Illinois concludes the three-game stretch at Indiana State tonight.
