Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 20, 2021

Basketball

The United Red Storm boys basketball team took sole possession of first place of the Lincoln Trail Conference on Friday night with a 71-66 victory over Wethersfield on Senior Night. The Red Storm led by 15 points at the half and made just enough free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win. Junior Cormaic Flynn led United with 29 points. Cormaic’s brother Declan, a senior, scored 21 points and fellow senior Jackson Bergren had twelve. The all-time leading scorer in Lincoln Trail Conference history, Coltin Quagliano, had 23 points, two points under his season average. United improved to (5-0) in the LTC. Wethersfield falls to (4-1). United avoided a letdown after the big win on Friday with a 60-48 win on the road against West Prairie on Saturday. This time, it was Declan leading the way with 27 points and Cormaic chipping in with 20. That win makes the Red Storm (9-0) overall.

The United Red Storm girls basketball team earned their first victory of the season on Friday night with a 47-38 win at Wethersfield. Karragan Sperry led a balanced United scoring attack with 11 points and Maddie Penn was also in double figures with 10.

The Monmouth-Roseville boys and girls basketball took the hour and a half trip south to Camp Point to take on the Panthers on Saturday evening. The Titan boys led big at the half, leading 34-19 at the break but Camp Point Central would mount a furious comeback in the final two quarters. Monmouth-Roseville escapes with a 56-50 win. Titan leading scorer in their opening win over West Hancock, Quincy Talivaa, will miss the rest of the season with a wrist injury. With Talivaa out, Jack Thompson stepped up his scoring with 27 points, including 11 in the first quarter. Thompson led all scorers in the game.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls jumped out to a 19-4 lead at the end of the first quarter of their game against the Camp Point Central/Southeastern co-op. They would cruise to a 59-30 win to improve to (3-1) on the season. Ryley Huston led three Titan girls in double figures with 17. Ryley’s sister Carmyn scored 14 and Kelci Shelton had 13 points, all in the first half.

Also on Saturday, the Abingdon-Avon girls remained unbeaten on the season with a 56-34 win over Ridgewood. Ashley Jones led the (7-0) Tornadoes with 23 points. Brook Pieper had 12 and Emma Ginther had 11 as well for A-Town.

Both the Galesburg Silver Streak boys and girls basketball won a pair of Western Big Six Conference games over the weekend to remain in first place in their respective standings. The Streak boys beat Quincy at home on Friday ngith 64-50 and a road game at United Township 54-39 on Saturday.

The Galesburg girls were victorious over Quincy on Friday 54-51 and at home vs. UT 57-38 on Senior Night on Saturday.

Swimming and Diving

United High School boys swimmer Ethan Elswick participated in a meet in Peoria on Saturday. Elswick placed 2nd in the 100 yard freestyle and took 3rd in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High basketball teams split with ICS on Saturday. The 7th grade Titans fell 41-12 to the Trojans. Leading the Titans in scoring was Landyn Angelo with 5 points. Andrew Way had 17 points for ICS. The 8th grade Titans topped ICS 45-40. Junior Avendano led Monmouth-Roseville with 14. Way also led the way for ICS in the second game as well with 16.
