Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Feb. 22, 2021

Basketball

The Abingdon-Avon girls basketball team has gotten off to a blistering start to the season, winning their seven games of the season and receiving the #8 ranking in the first Class 1A AP poll. With no postseason this year, the Lady Tornadoes have had their sites set on winning a Prairieland Conference North Division title. For any team in the North to do that, they always have to go through Knoxville to get it done. The two teams matched up in Abingdon last night. The Tornadoes ratched it up the defense from the opening tip, shutting out Knoxville through the first quarter, jumping out a 12-0 lead. A-Town led the game 23-10 at the half and went on for a 59-39 win. Ashley Jones led all scorers in the game with 18 points to lead Abingdon-Avon. Emma Ginther had 14 and Brook Pieper had eleven for A-Town, as well. Kynlee Stearns was the only Blue Bullet in double figures with 12. The Lady Tornadoes are now (8-0) overall and (2-0) in the Prairieland North. Knoxville falls to (6-3) and (1-1) in division play. The next road block to a North Division for A-Town is a date with also (2-0) Brimfield on Thursday night in Abingdon. Brimfield beat North Fulton 71-36 last night.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls baskeball team’s only loss of the season has been to Abingdon-Avon in their second game of the season. The Titans were in Aledo last night for a non-conference game against the Mercer County Golden Eagles. Monmouth-Roseville broke open a close game in the second quarter to lead 29-17 at the half and would maintain a double digit lead throughout most of the second half. The final score read Monmouth-Roseville 53, Mercer County 39. The Titans, now (4-1) overall, had seven girls reach the scoring column, led by Carmyn Huston’s 11 points. Four other players scored eight or nine points, as the Titans put out a balanced scoring attack. Madi Finch had twelve for Mercer County to lead all scorers. The Golden Eagles fall to (3-5) on the season.

Elsewhere in local high school girls basketball, it was Illini West over Macomb 58-26, West Prairie over ROWVA/Williamsfield 41-34 and Ridgewood beating Kewanee 45-34.

Junior High

In junior high volleyball, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans hosted Rockridge in Roseville. The 7th grade Titans fell to the Rockets 25-8 and 25-11. Kaylee Ibarra led the Titans with 5 service points. The 8th grade Titans also came up short against the Rockets 25-15 and 25-23. Leading for Monmouth-Roseville was Molly McVey with 10 service points and 6 digs. Brianna Woodard with 7 kills, 4 digs, 1 block and 7 serving points. Mia Reynolds had 6 serving points, and 7 assists. The Titans will travel to Orion on Wednesday at 5:30.

The United junior high volleyball team took on the A-Town Tornadoes tonight. United’s 7th grade won 25-22 25-23. Neveah Stout was the kills leader with 5 while Kendall Mills added 3. Maguinlee Tierney led the way with 6 aces while Samantha Murphy added 5. Tierney also had 7 assists. The 8th grade girls also won in straight sets 25-19 25-22. Kill leaders on the night were Emma Robinson 7, Alayna Penn 4, Emma Austin 3 and Alexa Anderson 2. Alexa Anderson was the digs leader with 3, Cameron Anderson, Emma Austin and Emma Robinson had 2 each. Cameron Anderson had 7 assists, while Emma Austin and Jacey Hasten each had a block.

The Monmouth-Roseville boys basketball teams traveled to Rockridge Monday night. The 7th grade Titans fell to the Rockets 41-25. Landyn Angelo led Monmouth-Roseville in scoring with 15 points. The 8th grade Titans were defeated by the Rockets 47-20. Junior Avendano led the Titans with 6 points. The Titans will host Orion on Wednesday at 5:30.

The ICS Trojan boys basketball team was also on the road, playing at Costa Catholic Academy. The 7th grade Trojans garnered an exciting overtime win 33-39. Andrew Way had 15 for ICS, including four points in the extra period. The ICS 8th grade lost 41-25. David Simmons ten points to lead ICS.
