Basketball
The Prairie Communications Sports Network was at United High School last night for a Lincoln Trail Conference boys basketball match up between the host Red Storm and the West Central Heat. A fast-paced first quarter ended with the hosts leading 20-9. The Flynn boys, Declan and Cormaic, did most of the scoring for United with eight and six points, respectively. Both would also have solid second quarters and the Red Storm would take a 37-29 lead into the halftime break. Declan had 17 points in the first 16 minutes, with younger brother Cormaic totaling 12. Jordan Roller put up 12 points in the first half for West Central, ten of those came in the second period. The Heat actually closed the gap to 31-29 towards the end of the second quarter but United ran off the final six points in the final minute. The third quarter was all United as the Red Storm outscored the Heat 25-6. The lead would grow to 29 points at one point in the third quarter and the final was United 71, West Central 52. Cormaic Flynn ended with 27 points to lead all scorers, with Declan Flynn scoring 21. Nolan Leffler was also in double figures for United with 11. Roller led West Central with 23 points. Brandon Olson chipped in with 11 for the Heat, as well. United is now (3-0) overall and (2-0) in Lincoln Trail Conference play. West Central falls to (0-3) and (0-2).
The Galesburg Silver Streak boys began their season at home vs. Sterling. Galesburg holds on for a 50-47 victory. Demarco Harden led Galesburg with 15 points, while Kyleb Meadows added 14.
The Macomb Bomber boys beat Farmington 48-32. Connor Watson led the (3-0) Bombers with 16 points. Leighton Holthaus also scored in double figures with ten.
The Abingdon-Avon Tornado girls basketball came back from a 2-point halftime deficit to knock off Bushnell-Prairie City 51-42. The Tornadoes broke open a tie-game entering the fourth quarter by outscoring the Spartans 18-9 in the final eight minutes. With the win, A-Town is still unbeaten on the season at (2-0). Brook Pieper led the Lady Tornadoes with 16 points. She was helped by 12 points from Ashley Jones. Ashanti Strange scored 13 points to lead B-PC.
The Galesburg girls didn’t have nearly as much trouble in their win over Sterling, getting a 59-47 win. The Streaks led by 24 points at one point. Riley Jenkins led the Lady Streaks with 26 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Livingston added 15 for Galesburg as well.
The Ridgewood girls basketball team beat Mercer County 44-21, on the strength of 18 points by Brecken Anderson.
Bowling
The Galesburg girls team defeated Kewanee 2,466 to 1,889 at Abbe Lanes in Abingdon. Chloe Day had the high game with a 266. Day also had the high 3 game series with a 615. Galesburg gets back on the lanes tonight with a home match against West Central.
Swimming and Diving
The Galesburg Silver Streak boys swimming and diving team fell to a contingent of Sterling, Morrison and Rock Falls by the score of 116-66. Getting individual wins for Galesburg was Karter Davison in then 1 meter dive and Riley Stevenson in the 500 yard freestyle.
The lone United Red Storm High School boys’ swimmer Ethan Elswick competed last night at Dunlap High School. Other schools besides Dunlap, included Pekin and Wethersfield. Elswick placed 4th in the 500 yard freestyle and had a 3rd place in the 200 yard IM. Ethan also competed in an exhibition 400 yard freestyle relay race with swimmers from Wethersfield and Dunlap that placed an unofficial 2nd.
