Pothole Season Has Arrived in the Midwest

Share

With temperature extremes and a big snow ravaging roadways this winter, an IDOT engineer says there is no shortage of potholes on state roads. Joe Monroe says crews are staying busy making repairs to their highways, since the frozen precipitation and the freeze-thaw cycle has caused some noticeable damage.

“Where there’s moisture, it’s warming up a little bit during the day with the heat of the sun and then when that sun goes below the horizon, if there is enough cooling activity, it’s freezing and expanding and that is what is causing the potholes to propagate throughout the Midwest.”

Monroe says crews are working on fixing roads around the district every day that it is safe to do so.
