Sandburg Volleyball Goes to 2-0 After Sweeping Unbeaten Triton

Galesburg, IL – The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team had little trouble knocking Triton from the ranks of the unbeatens Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Trojans 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers moved to 2-0 on the season while handing Triton (4-1) its first loss. Sandburg’s attack was led by 12 kills from Carley Reeves-Eakins (Branson, Mo./Reeds Spring) as the Chargers hit .258 for the match.

Sandburg also got seven kills, three blocks and two aces from sophomore middle Annie McKim (Yates City, Ill./home-schooled). Setter Laney Chiaravalle (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) had 25 assists and eight digs for the Chargers, and libero Kelsey Hobson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) had 20 digs.

Freshmen Megan Crome (Marshall, Ill./Marshall) and Jerzi Johnson (Monmouth, Ill./United) each added six kills for Sandburg, and Gracie Rademaker (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) chipped in five kills and six digs for the Chargers.

Tied at 16 in the first set, the Chargers won eight of the next 10 points, highlighted by three McKim kills and a Crome ace. Sandburg led 9-8 in the second before pulling away thanks to a 7-0 run on the serve of Chiaravalle, who had an ace in that stretch.

Triton got off to a 4-1 lead in the third before a McKim block sparked a stretch where Sandburg took 11 of 12 to open up a 12-5 advantage. The final nine points of the spurt came on McKim’s serve, which included an ace.
