The United Red Storm boys basketball took a huge step towards a Lincoln Trail Conference title last Friday night with a 71-66 win over perennial power Wethersfield at the Fieldhouse at United High School. The Red Storm could take two more steps this week as they attempt to win their first LTC boys basketball regular season championship in the consolidation’s history, which dates back to 2007. The last varsity championship any sports team at United was garnered by the Red Storm volleyball team in 2011.
The first of this week’s two important games takes place tonight as United hosts Princeville at The Fieldhouse. The Red Storm are (5-0) in the LTC, while the Princes come into the game at (4-1). The lone conference loss for Princeville came at the hands of the Wethersfield Flying Geese. The Geese got a 62-55 win over the Princes back on February 6th. The loss to United last Friday was Wethersfield’s lone loss for in conference play. The Flying Geese need a win by Princeville to get back into a tie for first place, with both the Princes and Red Storm.
Princeville is (6-2) overall on the season, with the aforementioned loss to Wethersfield and the Princes also lost to a quality Peoria Quest by a score of 80-67 on February 13. Princeville claimed the Lincoln Trail Conference tournament last spring. Red Storm head coach Doug Dennison says he highly respects the Princes, but he and his ballclub are going to be ready for the challenge.
The second big game for United this week will be on Friday night as the Red Storm host Ridgewood for another LTC game. Ridgewood is off to a (5-3) overall and are currently (2-2) in the Lincoln Trail Conference. Ridgewood was another popular pick to win the conference before the season start. The Spartan’s Ganon Greenman poured in 51 points in a game against West Central earlier this season. Greenman also broke Ridgewood’s all-time career scoring record in a 60-55 loss to Princeville last Friday night. Greenman’s 1520 points broke the record of 1506 by Ganon’s older brother, Briar. Briar is a junior on the Monmouth College men’s basketball roster.
The United/Ridgewood game is scheduled to start at 7:30 on Friday night and you can hear it on Sunny 97.7 WMOI and online at 977wmoi.com with the pregame show beginning at around 7:15.
