Evanston plans to pay reparations to Black residents for past discrimination. The Evanston city council approved the idea with its 8-1 vote yesterday. Four-hundred-thousand-dollars in housing assistance will be made available to eligible Black families including 25-thousand for home repairs or property down payments. Some of the funding is from taxes on recreational marijuana. To qualify, an Evanston resident must be the direct descendant of a Black person who lived in the city between 1919 and 1969 who experienced discrimination because of city policies.
