Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for March 2, 2021

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys basketball team took on an unfamiliar foe in Southeastern on Monday night. The Titans trailed by five points at 12-7 at the end of the first quarter, but would recover with one of their best quarters of the season in the second. Monmouth-Roseville outscores the Suns 19-9 in the period to lead 26-21 at the half. Southeastern would regain the momentum in the second half and get a 28-13 scoring advantage in the second half and get a 49-39 win. Junior Charlie Fletcher led Monmouth-Roseville in scoring with 14 points. Southeastern 6-6 Danny Stephens, who normally averages 27.5 points a game, scored 21 points to lead all scorers. The Titans fall to (2-4) on the season and will have a quick turnaround, heading to Wharton Fieldhouse in Moline tonight for a game against the (10-2), Class 4A Moline Maroons.

The United Red Storm girls basketball team hosted Annawan at United High School last night. The Red Storm fall 68-40. United was led in scoring by Luci Kane with 13 points and Jennifer Shimmin was also in double figures with ten points.

The West Central Heat girls basketball team welcomed Stark County to West Central High School in Biggsville. Stark County is in a battle for the Lincoln Trail Conference but it was West Central that gets the W, 50-40. Mady Reed and Lisa Bartels were both in double figures for the Heat, with 15 and 10 points, respectively. West Central is now (6-3) overall, while Stark falls to (8-3).

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls basketball team loses to Sterling 50-41 at the Fieldhouse on the GHS campus. The Streaks were playing without their senior leader, Riley Jenkins, due to a knee injury. Lauren Livingston led Galesburg with 12 points. Galesburg is (9-3) on the season.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys basketball team also lost last night, losing to Sterling in a close one, 67-64. Eric Price led the (6-3) Streaks with 17 points.

Elsewhere in boys high school basketball, A-Town lost to Farmington 63-38.
The Knoxville Blue Bullets improved to (10-1) with a 69-52 win over Elmwood. Jason Hise had 21 points for Knoxville, while his brother David added 17.

The West Central Heat boys were beaten by Stark County 53-46.

Swimming and Diving

United High School sophomore swimmer Ethan Elswick took part in a meet in Dunlap and came home with a 2nd place finish in the 500 yard freestyle race and a 5th place in the 200 yard freestyle.

Junior High

The United Jr. High boys basketball teams swept the A-Town Tornadoes on Tuesday night. The 7th grade game Red Storm won 47-35. Scoring leader for the Red Storm was Ian Leffler with 20. The Red Storm were also victorious in the 8th grade game winning 39-23. Leading the Red Storm was Elliot Copeland with 15.

The ICS Junior high boys basketball team took on the West Central Heat last night. The ICS 7th grade wins 35-9. Clay Casteel led ICS with 14 points. ICS 8th grade get a sweep on the night, winning the nightcap, 27-7.
