Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for March 3, 2021

Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys basketball team had the opportunity to play in one of the iconic basketball venues in the state of Illinois last night as they took on the Class 4A Western Big Six Conference Moline Maroons at Wharton Fieldhouse. The Maroons took advantage of their home court with great shooting from beyond the 3-point arc, especially early on. Moline drilled six, 3’s in the first eight minutes alone, but the Titans only trailed on the scoreboard 28-17. The Maroons hit two more three-pointers in the second quarter to take a 46-24 lead at the half. Moline would go on for the 80-50 victory. Connor Thompson scored a career-high 19 points to lead Monmouth-Roseville in scoring. Jimmy Connell had ten points as well for the Titans, who fall to (2-5) on the season.

The United Red Storm boys basketball team also ventured into the Western Big Six Conference realm, heading to Geneseo High School. United stayed right with the Maple Leafs in the first half, trailing by one point at the end of the first quarter and three points at the half. The lead crept to four points at the end of the third quarter and by the time horn sounded at the end of the game, Geneseo led 58-51. Cormaic Flynn scored 24 and his brother Declan had 15 to lead United. United is now (12-2) for the year.

The Knoxville High School boys lost to Wethersfield 61-48. Wethersfield got a triple-double from All-Stater Coltin Quagliano. Quaglian scored 24 points, hauled in ten rebounds and handed out 11 assists. Ryan Sunderland scored 24 to lead Knoxville. Wethersfield is now (14-1) overall, while Knoxville falls to (10-2).

In girls high school basketball, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans went to Mendon Unity High School for a game against a solid Lady Mustangs. A pair of free throws by Ryley Huston gave Monmouth-Roseville a 59-58 lead with seven seconds left but Kylee Barry hit a layup at the buzzer to give the Lady Mustangs a 60-59 win. The loss snapped a six game winning streak for Monmouth-Roseville as they drop to (7-2) for the season. Huston led Monmouth-Roseville with 27 points.

Quincy Notre Dame beat the Macomb Bomber girls 64-46.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High basketball teams swept Knoxville Wednesday night. The 7th grade Titans win by seven points, 29-22. Drew Carlson Monmouth-Roseville with 8 points. Landyn Angelo and Calogero Sarcomo chipped in with 7. The 8th grade Titans topped Knoxville 54-34. Martwan Butler led all scorers in the game with 14 for Monmouth-Roseville. Ethan Clark and Junior Avendano contributed 8 points to the win, as well.
