Health screenings and seeking emergency medical attention continue to remain important despite being in the midst of a pandemic as early detection is vital. Diabetes Education Coordinator at OSF HealthCare Holy Family Medical Center Tina Canada shared cancer screenings are way down compared to three years ago:
“It is pretty shocking to know that the American Cancer Society has estimated that 22 million tests for five common cancers have been disrupted by COVID-19, risking delayed or misdiagnosis for about 80,000 people. Compared to the previous three years before the pandemic, this past year screening mammograms have decreased across the United States by 87%. 93% less people are getting pap smears, CT scans, which is a screening for lung cancer have decreased by 38%, colonoscopies were down 90%, and prostate cancer screenings were down 60%.”
COVID protocols remain in place at OSF HealthCare to ensure the safety of all entering the hospital or clinic. Appointments can be scheduled online at osfhealthcare.org/get-screened or by calling 734-1414.
