On Saturday, May 16th, at 12:50 A.M., the Monmouth Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from inside a residential home at 407 North 10th Street. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames. Firefighters started searching for occupants and retrieved a dog from the inside of the structure suffering from smoke inhalation and had overheated. Firefighters and Paramedics administered oxygen and cooling techniques to the family pet. After a few minutes, the dog had recovered and was transported to a veterinarian for a check-up. No human occupants were injured during the event.

A request for mutual aid was made, and additional departments responded to the scene. The fire was contained to the structure and did not spread to adjacent properties. A series of offensive and defensive tactics were performed, and the location was secure in approximately 4 hours.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal.

Other agencies who responded to help with the incident were the Cameron Fire Department, Kirkwood Fire Department, Galesburg Fire Department, Roseville Fire Department, Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service, and the Monmouth Police Department.
