Shot Clock to be Considered for IHSA Boys and Girls Basketball

A much-discussed change could be coming to high school basketball in the near future. There are many folks on each side of the shot-clock debate. The National Federation of State High School Associations Board of Directors approved a recommendation by the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee to implement a 35-second shot clock, beginning with the 2022-2023 season. That doesn’t necessarily mean it will start in Illinois, as the recommendation stated that it will be up to individual states to choose to implement it. What does that mean for Illinois? Schools have stated that there are certainly things to consider before implementing a shot clock, such as costs for the equipment and installation of the clock and hiring an extra person at the scorer’s table to run it. The IHSA Board will next meet on June 14 to discuss it further.
