The Monmouth Fire Department is currently testing applicants for their eligibility list. Chief Casey Rexroat shares more on what the tests will consist of:
“Of course, you put in a written application, and then you do a physical agility test. That test includes things like a timed mile-and-a-half run, and a short obstacle course that is also timed; we would also have them climb a ladder to see if they are okay with heights. After the physical agility test is the written exam. The written exam tests the applicants’ basic knowledge, reading comprehension, mathematics, and listening comprehension. It’s just a very basic test, they don’t even study for it when they come in. We use the results from that test and an oral interview that comes after that to rank people on a list, and after that, they are able to give any certifications they might have, or military points, and we’ll eventually come up with a final list that is posted for two years.”
Rexroat notes that ride along requests are welcome. After being hired, the applicants will be put through an eight-week academy that includes training them in hazardous materials and vehicle machinery.
