30% of the students in the Monmouth-Roseville School District have a home language other than English. More than fifteen different languages are represented within the district creating a very robust multi-language learner program that continues to expand says Superintendent Ed Fletcher:

“Something that is new for us next year is we will have a bilingual French program in pre-k and first grade. The number of students is over 20, French speaking students, so by law that is one of the things that we have to implement. It will be another addition to what we are trying to do and another modification to the program. Also, one of our high school counselors brought to us a year and a half ago a seal of bi-literacy award. Essentially if you get a seal of bi-literacy, you have the opportunity to get college credit. We had some seals of bi-literacy in Spanish, French, and Chen. We were the first high school in the state of Illinois to have any students get the seal of bi-literacy in Chen.”

Fletcher reports staff in the district are also taking classes through Western Illinois University to receive an ESL Endorsement on their teaching license to continue to build the multi-language program at Monmouth-Roseville.
