United Red Storm Baseball Wins First Regional in School History

It was a great night for the Lincoln Trail Conference last night, as three different teams won baseball regional championships.

The PCSN was at United High School for the Red Storm baseball team’s class 1A regional title game against Abingdon-Avon. The Red Storm were trying for their first regional plaque since the consolidation between the Warren and Alexis school districts in 2004.

United didn’t take long to get the offense going, as Cormaic Flynn’s towering 3-run homerun in the bottom of the first gave his team an early lead. United tacked another run on in the second on another extra-base hit by Flynn. His double brought home Drew Brown all the way around from first base to extend the lead to 4-0.

A-Town finally dented the scoreboard in the top of third. A leadoff homerun by Drake DeJaynes was followed later in the inning by Micah Rodeffer coming all the way around from first base on a failed pick-off attempt and another error on the same play at 3rd base. Abingdon-Avon threatened to tie the game in the top of the fourth but a nice relay throw by leftfielder AJ Jenks and shortstop Aidan Parkins on a double to left, threw out a runner trying to score. United got out of the jam unscathed to retain a 4-2 lead.

The Red Storm put the game away in the bottom of the 4th, scoring three times. A 2-run single by Flynn gave him six rbis for the day and also gave his team a 6-2 lead. Red Storm starting pitcher Toby Turnquist helped his own cause by bringing in Flynn with a single of his own. Turnquist would shut the Tornadoes out the rest of the way and United gets a 7-2 win.

The win improved United’s overall record to (20-2). The Red Storm will now play Camp Point Central in a sectional semi-final at home on Wednesday at 4:30. Camp Point defeated Jacksonville Routt 4-0 in a rain-shortened game last night.
