50 year anniversary of improbable IHSA baseball story

Share

This year marks the 50-year anniversary of one of the most memorable IHSA baseball stories. So good that a book was written about the 1971 tale of Macon High School. Sports Illustrated writer Chris Ballard’s book is titled “One Shot at Forever: A Small Town, an Unlikely Coach, and a Magical Baseball Season”. It details the improbable run of the small school team, advancing all the way to the state championship game in a one-class system. The squad was led by an English teacher with no coaching experience.

Macon would lose in the state title game to Waukegan by a final of 4-2.
