Sally J. Button, 88, of Knoxville, IL, went to her Heavenly home on August 28, 2021, at 4:58 AM at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, IA.

She was born March 25, 1933, at the home of her grandparents in Monmouth, Illinois, the only child of Willis F. and A. Kendall (Stephens) Sunderland. She was raised by her mother and maternal grandmother. She grew up in Galesburg attending local schools. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1951. She attended Knox College and Carl Sandburg College.

She married Paul W. Lagerstrom on December 25, 1951 and later married Edward L. Button. He preceded her in death.

Sally was a Registered Nurse, employed at the former Galesburg Research Hospital and Galesburg Cottage Hospital. She received much personal satisfaction from her chosen profession. She was a volunteer for Hospice Compassus and received recognition for 20 years of service. She also volunteered for Knox County CASA as a court appointed special advocate.  Sally was also a member of a local investment club in Rio, IL.

Sally was a member of the Galesburg First Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She lived out her faith through active involvement in the ministries of the church. 

She was an avid reader all her life. Her various pets throughout her life brought Sally much happiness.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Luan and Terry Swigert, Monmouth, IL; four grandchildren, Amy (Wes) Arteaga, Monmouth, IL, Rebecca (Jeremy) Fenton, Manteno, IL, Andrew (Melissa) Swigert, McPherson, KS, and Rachel Swigert, Monmouth, IL; and 13 great-grandchildren. A niece and nephew also survive.

She was preceded in death by her mother and her beloved son, Bill Lagerstrom, in 1998.

Visitation service for friends and family will be held on Saturday, September 4th from 2:00-4:00 pm at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory in Monmouth, IL. Cremation has been accorded with a private family interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Alpha-1 Foundation, Galesburg First Church of the Nazarene, or Hospice Compassus.
