Here’s our first WMOI/WRAM Athletes of the Week for the new school year, with ending August 29th, 2021:

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan Athlete of the Week is freshman soccer player, Isaac Garcia. Isaac has had a great start to his high school career, going (4-0-1) with four shutouts in his first week of varsity action. His diving save on a penalty kick towards the end of the championship match of the Pekin Invitational ensured his team a tournament title.

The United Red Storm Athlete of the Week is junior boys cross country runner, Zair Velazquez. Zair has really gotten his junior year off to a fantastic start. He’s already garnered two, top-five finishes in his first two meets of the season. Zair placed 3rd overall in the Farmington Invitational and then earned another 3rd place medal in a four-team meet in Kewanee.

The West Central Heat Athlete of the Week is junior football player, Kaiden Droste. Kaiden got his 2021 season off to an amazing start. He returned the opening kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown. Kaiden was just getting started, rushing for 185 yards on just 14 carries, including a 62 yard touchdown scamper that gave the Heat the lead for good.

The Galesburg Silver Streak Athlete of the Week is senior volleyball player, Abby Lingafelter. Abby has already made an impression this season. She was named to the Quincy Early Bird All-Tournament team for her performance this past weekend. Abby smashed at least 8 kills in three of her team’s four matches on Saturday, which helped the Streaks win the consolation title.

The Abingdon-Avon Tornado Athlete of the Week is senior soccer player, Tyler Carlson-Juhl. Tyler picked a great time for his first goal of the season. His score against Mooseheart in the Byron Invitational gave the Tornadoes their first win of the season. Tyler’s first tally also gave A-town a runner-up finish in the tournament.

Congratulations to all of these student-athletes!! Thanks to our AOTW sponsors….. McDonough Telephone Cooperative (mdtc), Tompkins State Bank and Kehoe Eye Care – Galesburg/Kehoe Eye Care – Monmouth
