Local Sports Update for 11-17-2021

Play continued last night in local girls basketball pre-Thanksgiving tournaments. The Monmouth-Roseville Titans opened their ROWVA/Williamsfield-Ridgewood tournament with a match up against ROWVA/Williamsfield at Williamsfield High School. The Titans led by one point, 22-21, but went into the fourth quarter tied at 34 win the Lady Cougars. Monmouth-Roseville outscores R/W 16-10 in the final period to get a 50-44 victory. The Titan’s Mattie Gillen led all scorers with 28 points, including ten points in the important 4th quarter. Carmyn Huston was also in double figures with 14 for Monmouth-Roseville, as well. Carolyn German had 17 for the Cougars. The Knoxville Blue Bullets won the first game in Williamsfield, 41-25 over Orion.

Two other pool games in the tournament were played at Alwood High School in Woodhull. The United Red Storm girls got their tournament started with a 43-31 loss to Ridgewood. Luci Kane led United with nine points. A-Town improved to (2-0) in their pool with a 74-40 win over Bushnell-Prairie City. The Tornadoes were led in the win by Brooke Peeper’s 27 and Ashley Jones’ 20 points. With the victory, A-Town wins their pool and will play in the semifinals on Friday night at 8:00 at Alwood High School.  Pool play continues in the tournament tonight with Monmouth-Roseville taking on Galva at 7:30 and Knoxville playing West Central at 6:00 in Williamsfield. A win by Monmouth-Roseville and they will win their pool, sending them to the semifinal on Friday night at 8:00 against the winner of tonight’s Knoxville West Central matchup.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls began play in their own Galesburg Thanksgiving Shootout at Thiel (theel) Gym last night. The Streaks pulled away in the second half and earned a 66-49 win over Limestone. Kiarra (KEE-are-uh) Kilgore led Galesburg with 23 points and eight rebounds. Abby Davidson chipped in with 16 for Galesburg, as well.

At the Fulton County tournament in Lewistown, it was North Fulton in a barn-burner over Farmington 58-57 and the host Lewistown Indians 57-27 over South Fulton.

In junior high boys basketball last night, the ICS Trojans host Cambridge at ICS Junior High in Monmouth. The Trojan 7th grade fell 27-17. Alex Simmons led ICS with 7 points. The ICS 8th grade salvaged a split on the night, beating Cambridge 41-20 to improved to (5-0) on the season. Andrew Way and Clay Casteel were both in double figures with 20 and 16 points, respectively.

The United Junior High boys were at home against Abingdon-Avon. A-Town wins the 7th grade contest 31-29 in overtime. Lucas Horner had 12 points to lead United. United gets the win in the 8th grade game, 41-35. Ian Leffler led United with 12 points. Nolan Jenks and Kelton Ryan each had 11 points, as well, for the Red Storm.
