Local Sports Update for Nov. 16

High school basketball got underway last night with girls basketball pre-Thanksgiving tournaments getting started. The ROWVA/Williamsfield Cranberry Classic and Ridgewood tournaments have combined to form a 12-team mega tourney that will be played at three different locations……ROWVA High School in Oneida, Alwood High School in Woodhull and Williamsfield High School. The tournament features many local schools participating. Monday night’s pool play opening night was played at ROWVA High School in Oneida and Alwood High School in Woodhull. In Oneida, West Central beat Orion 45-30 in the first game of the night and ROWVA/Williamsfield knocked off Galva 55-41. Over in Woodhull, Abingdon-Avon got their season off to a great start with a 62-39 win over Mercer County. A-Town extended a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter with an 18-4 scoring advantage in the second second period. Ashley Jones led Abingdon-Avon with 21 points and Brooke Pieper chipped in with 14. It was Rockridge doubling up Ridgewood 68-34 in the second game in Woodhull. Pool play continues tonight.

The Macomb Thanksgiving Tournament opened up last night, as well, with all six teams in actiona and three games taking place at Macomb High School. It was Illini West over Pleasant Plains 50-17, Alleman beating Illini Bluffs 35-28 and the host Bombers losing to Havana 52-15 in new Bomber head coach Jackson Kane’s debut in Macomb. Kane was the head coach at West Central last season. The tournament is off on Tuesday, before picking up Wednesday night with more round-robin action.

In the Geneseo/Sherrard tournament, it was Sherrard over Annawan 56-39 at Sherrard High School.

In junior high boys basketball, the Monmouth-Roseville Titan 7th and 8th grade teams swept Galva. The 7th grade Titans won 26-20. Leading the Titans in scoring was Lars Bergren with 20. The 8th grade Titans topped Galva 46-44. Calogero Sarcomo led Monmouth-Roseville with 23 points and Drew Carlson chipped in with 14.
