Stanley L. Olinger, 92 of rural Galesburg, passed away at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, November 28, 2021, at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
He was born August 1, 1929 in Knox County, the son of Russell H. and Josephine (Trulock) Olinger. He married Cora Marie Smith on August 15, 1954 at the Abingdon Christian Church. She preceded him in death on January 29, 2021. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Martha Spencer and Annabelle Underwood.
Stanley is survived by two daughters, Deane (Larry) Honbo of Westmont and Donna (Scott) Browne of Berwick; three grandchildren, Bryan (Tiffany) Browne, Kylie (Tim) Smith and Cannon Honbo; two great-grandchildren, Ryker Browne and Braylen Browne; one sister, Marilyn Olinger of Abingdon; and nieces, nephews, and their families.
He attended one room schools in Hermon, Indian Point and Cherry Grove and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1947. He was drafted into the US Army in March of 1951. He was stationed at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin for one year and later spent one year stationed in the Bavarian Alps in Germany. He also served six years of non-active duty in the Army Reserves, prior to his discharge.
Stanley was farmer all his life. He last planted corn and soy beans at the age of 80. He was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church and served as a Deacon for several years. He was a member of the Knox County Farm Bureau, Knox County Pork Producers, FSA Cedar Township Knox County, Knox County Audubon Society, and the Abingdon Pottery Club. He and Marie were avid bird watchers, specifically Bluebirds and Hummingbirds. But most of all and in his own writing, he loved his family, plants and birds.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 2, 2021 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 3, 2021, at the chapel. Rev. Will Brown and Rev. Raymond McLaren will officiate. Military rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 Honor Guard will be conducted at the funeral home following the service. Cremation will be accorded following the services with private burial at the Abingdon Cemetery at a later date.
