Virginia A. “Ginny” Smith, 83, of Monmouth, IL passed away at 8:45 am, Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at the Monmouth Nursing Home., Monmouth, IL.

Ginny was born May 12, 1938 in Mt. Sterling, IL the daughter of Virgil and Nellie (Sheppard) Pate.  She was raised and educated in Warren County graduating from Monmouth High School.

Ginny married William T. Smith in Monmouth, IL on September 8, 1956 and he passed away on May 11, 2006. 

Ginny was a supervisor at Protexall in Galesburg for 20 years before retiring in 2003.

She was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church. She enjoyed painting Indian ceramics and knitting. Her great joy was being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughters, Danita “DeeDee” Ortery of Monmouth, IL and Paula (Sam) Schaumleffel of Roseville, IL; her grandchildren, Jodi (Damon) Slater of LA, Alicia (Nick) Ortery of Berwick, IL and Kenny Helms of Monmouth, IL; 4 sisters; 1 brother and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Debie McIntosh; 1 sister and 1 brother.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00-7:00 pm, Monday, November 22, 2021 at McGuire & Davies Funeral home and Crematory, Monmouth.  A private family interment will be at Lenox Union Cemetery at a later date.  Memorials may be given to the Virginia Smith Memorial Fund and sent to the funeral home.

Arrests Made Related to Oquawka Burglary

On February 5, 2025, at approximately 2:56a.m. Hancock/Henderson 911 received a call of a burglary in progress at DC’s Bar/Tavern in Oquawka, IL. The complainant advised 3 unknown persons had
