Abingdon-Avon Tornado Boys Garner Tight Win Over West Hancock at Macomb/Western Holiday Tournament

Abingdon outscored West Hancock 9-2 in the fourth quarter to steal a close win 41-39. This low-scoring, sometimes frantic game was back-and-forth from beginning to end. The Titans appeared to have the game in hand, up by five at the end of the third quarter. And that doesn’t sound like much, but the defensive-minded teams only combined to score 21 points in that third quarter.

Tied 39-39 with 42 seconds remaining, Abingdon-Avon held the ball for a final shot. West Hancock’s Luke Jacquot blocked a Parker Stoneking jumper…but Drew Foutch was there with an offensive rebound and was fouled. He nailed both free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining. West Hancock set up a play and had a look, but lost the ball at midcourt as time ran out.

A-Town was led in scoring by Parker Stoneking’s 19 points, including 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Easten Schisler added 16 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.

West Hancock didn’t have a double-digit scorer, but had a balanced attack led by Colin LeMaire’s nine, Isaac Siegfried’s seven, and Bryan Gerhardt’s seven. Luke Jacquot had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Abingdon-Avon advances to the consolation semifinal to face Monmouth-Roseville in Game 18. That game will be held at 10:30am at WIU’s Brophy Hall. West Hancock’s tournament has ended.

Monmouth-Roseville outscored Wethersfield 23-9 in a pivotal third quarter to advance to the consolation semifinals. The Titans got the better end of several key statistics: points in the paint (42-18), points off turnovers (38-7), and fast break points (16-2). Wethersfield had a lead with 2:48 left in the first quarter after a 3-pointer by Zeb Rashid. The Titans responded with a layup by Ben Anderson and never looked back.

It wasn’t all roses for Monmouth-Roseville, as they shot just 2-for-12 from beyond the arc, with the only successful attempts made by non-starters Derek Chandler and Charlie Fletcher. The team’s free throw shooting (9-for-18) was also below tournament average. However, their defense forced 27 turnovers, including 17 steals.

The Titans had a tournament-high four players finish in double-figures: Jerome Jackson (12), Logan Bratcher (12), Charlie Fletcher (11), and Ben Anderson (10). Ben Anderson was one board short of a double-double, as he finishes with nine grabs. He also had a team-high four assists. Jerome Jackson slapped away a tournament-high seven steals.

The Flying Geese were led in scoring by a duo of double-digit scorers: Will Rumbold (11) and Aimery Jackson (10). Landon Sauer led his team with eight rebounds. Cole Troxell had a team-high four assists.

The Titans of Monmouth-Roseville (8-6) advance to Game 18, where they will play the winner of the Abingdon-Avon/West Hancock game. That game will be played at WIU’s Brophy Hall at 10:30am. Wethersfield has been eliminated from competition.
