Sandburg’s Upward Bound Program Has Immediate Openings for Area Students

Limited spots are still available for the 2021-22 school year in Carl Sandburg College’s Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) program for current high school freshmen, sophomores, or juniors.

UBMS serves students in the Galesburg, Abingdon-Avon, Monmouth-Roseville, Knoxville, and ROWVA school districts, working with first-generation and income-eligible students to provide support throughout high school and ultimately pursuing a bachelor’s degree.

Director Stephanie Woodard says the program meets with students weekly and hosts monthly activities:

“We’re a math-science program and have a lot of students who are interested in computer technology,” Woodard said, “and we also have a lot of students who just really like STEM, but they actually don’t want to do that as a career.

“That’s OK. You do not have to pursue a STEM field in order to be in our program. That’s important for students to know. We want to help students explore the subjects and activities that interest them.”

Woodard earned her bachelor’s degree at Monmouth College and her master’s from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.

Formal recruitment for the 2022-23 academic year will begin in late January/early February, and will include current eighth grade students.
