Holiday travel season is here. While out on the roads and making stops along the way, Security Savings Bank Vice President Dorothy Ricketts advises paying inside to protect your identity and bank accounts:
“When you travel, when you go to a gas station to fill with gas for example, we always recommend that with whatever form of payment, card payment that you use, that you take it inside to pay. It is not as easy, but as you travel gas stations are highly susceptible to having skimmers placed on their gas units. Skimmers collect the information from your card. Once that information is collected, the counterfeit card can be created that can be used right away without your knowledge. This information is also sold on the dark web, so a lot of different places can try to create a card with that information.”
Ricketts also suggests taking more than one form of payment with you at any given time, not just around the holidays, as most fraud happens on the weekends and credit, or debit cards are subject to fraud and could be shut down without a notice.
