The Galesburg Public Library has received $22,000 in grant funds from the Bouncing Back from the Pandemic: Developing Resources for the Local Workforce grant. The grant, which is awarded through the Illinois State Library, is awarded to libraries to help the community get back into the workforce.
As part of the grant, the library has hired Travis Downs as a Technology and Employment Specialist to help those who are searching for a job or looking to improve their technology skills. Travis has set hours at the library, and he can help with writing a resume, job searching, filling out applications, creating an email account, computer and phone skills, and much more. If you or someone you know is interested in free tech or employment assistance, call or email the library at 309-343-6118 or reference@galesburglibrary.org to schedule a personalized session with Travis.
In addition to the Technology and Employment Specialist, the library is also purchasing several test preparation books and resources, as well as laptops to check out with part of the grant funds. Laptops can be checked out for a week at a time, and will be equipped with resume building software, a camera for virtual interviews, and other tools to help job seekers. Laptops will be available starting in February. Also in February, the library will host an Essential Skills Academy in partnership with Carl Sandburg College and the Regional Office of Education. The Essential Skills Academy will be a two-session course that teaches attendees skills they need to succeed in the workforce, including interview preparation, workplace etiquette, and interpersonal skills. The course will be free to attendees. Please contact the library if you would like to be notified when registration for the class begins.
The Galesburg Public Library is located at 40 East Simmons Street in Galesburg.
Funding for this grant was awarded by the Illinois State Library, a Department of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, under the provisions of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA).
