Chief Switzer Reminds Motorists of “Scott’s Law” Safety Responsibilities

Barely two months into the new year and already eight (8) Illinois State Police squad cars have been struck in relation to the Move Over Law, and three Troopers have sustained injuries from Move Over Law-related crashes.

City of Monmouth Police Chief Joe Switzer would like to remind area motorists of their responsibilities related to what’s also known as “Scott’s Law”:

“When emergency vehicles are pulled over on the side of the road — it doesn’t matter whether it’s an ambulance, police car, fire truck — people who are driving down the roadway need to be aware of the law: you need to slow down, change lanes, and proceed with caution when moving around the emergency vehicles.”

Not only on the highway, “but also around town. The same law needs to be followed on our city streets,” Switzer said.

JANUARY MONTHLY REPORT: At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Monmouth City Council, Police Chief Joe Switzer submitted his monthly report for January, which included 27 criminal arrests, 58 ordinance violations, 875 calls for service, more than eighteen hundred (1,827) dispatch calls, and 24 accidents.

Chief Switzer reminds Monmouth and area citizens of the ways they can negate potential criminal activity:

“Our community is safe right now,” Switzer said Tuesday morning, during a “Community Hour” interview on WRAM. “At this point in time we’re not seeing (some of the rising crime rates in larger communities.

“As I’ve said before: lock your doors, lock your vehicles. If you see something suspicious, call the police department. Hopefully people are still taking heed of these suggestions, and we’ll keep things tamped down around here.”
