Frederick Joseph Stegall, 95 of rural Abingdon, passed away at 3:25 a.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2022, in the Emergency Room at Genesis Medical Center-Illini Campus in Silvis, Illinois.He was born June 14, 1926 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg, the son of Fred and Helen (Vawn) Stegall. His parents preceded him in death as did one young brother.Frederick is survived by several cousins and many friends.He attended Oak Grove Grade School and later graduated from Abingdon High School in1944. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served at the end of WW II, from January 25, 1945 until his discharge on December 6, 1946. He returned home to work the family farm with his father and eventually took over the farming operation on his own. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Galesburg Rifle Club. He was also a member of theKnox County Farm Bureau.Praying of the Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon followed by the Funeral Mass. Father Lee Brokaw will be the celebrant. Military rites by the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 Honor Guard will be held at the church following the mass. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Galesburg. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
