The roller-coaster nature of winter weather can also be problematic for pet dogs and cats, especially those that are left outside for extended periods of time.
Erin Buckmaster of the Knox County Humane Society reminds animal owners that severe weather is especially difficult when pets are chained outside or confined to a cage or pen.
“Please make sure, during the extreme weather, if you don’t like standing in a foot of snow, neither do they,” Buckmaster said, during a recent WRAM “Community Hour” interview.
“It can really be a sad situation when they (dogs) can’t move around in cold weather because they get hypothermia.”
