The Illinois senate passed a few school-related bills this week. One requires high school counselors to discuss technical education as well as college options with students, while another looks to ease the current shortage of teaching assistants says Chicago Senator Cristina Pacione-Zayas.
“Specifically, what we are trying to solve for is reducing the age for paraprofessionals in the pre-K through eighth grade classrooms from age 19 to 18. All other requirements will hold in place, but essentially we will be lowing the age to close the gap with the vacancies.”
A third measure adds community service as a possible penalty for speeding in a school zone or passing a stopped school bus. All three bills now move to the house.
