Each year 30 students are selected to participate in Carl Sandburg College’s Dental Hygiene program. Through the two-year program, students get hands-on clinic experience as they offer hygiene services to members of the community at a low cost, says Program Coordinator Stacy Kosier:
“We have very low-cost dental hygiene services that include cleanings, full mouth x-rays, pano x-rays, bite wing x-rays, sealants, and fluoride treatment. Our students do a lot of education with our patients; so, they teach patients properly how brush their teeth, how to floss their teeth, if they smoke or chew tobacco, then they talk to them about those effects on their oral cavity as well as the systemic effect. We also talk about nutritional counseling a little bit because nutritional counseling is very important for oral health as well”
