Red Storm Defeats Ridgewood, 44-42, in Regional Championship Thriller

KEWANEE — The United Red Storm boys basketball team, led by senior standout Cormaic Flynn’s 24 game-high points, defeated Ridgewood 44-42 Friday night to capture the Class 1A Wethersfield Regional title in front of an overflow crowd at the Home of the Flying Geese.

The regional basketball championship is the school’s first-ever in boys basketball.

United, which improved to 27-6 overall, will advance to Wednesday’s 7 p.m. sectional semifinal against Southeastern at Abingdon-Avon High School.

The first semifinal will be contested between Peoria Christian and Lewistown at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The semifinal winners will meet at 7 p.m. Friday for the sectional championship.

Abel Wilson contributed 12 points and Nolan Leffler had eight for the Red Storm, who had split two previous games with the Spartans this season.

Ridgewood (22-12) was led in scoring by Aaron Gotthart (14 points), Lucas Kessinger (12 points) and Josh Maher (10 points).
