Two Arrested for Burglary of AT&T Store in Galesburg

On Thursday February 17, 2022, at approximately 12:08 a.m., the Galesburg Police Department, and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to 506 Knox Square Drive Suite #1, AT&T retail store for a burglar alarm. On arrival, officers found damage to a rear door; however, no entry was gained. At approximately 1:34 a.m., officers responded back to the same location for a second alarm. In responding to the second alarm, a deputy from the Knox County Sheriff’s Department observed a vehicle fleeing from the business and a subject fleeing on foot from the same area.

Knox County Deputies pursued the fleeing vehicle north on Seminary Street and then east on Route 34. The vehicle was involved in a motor vehicle crash in the 2200 Block of Route 34. The driver of the vehicle attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by Knox County Deputies.

Officers from the Galesburg Police Department responded to the business where they found forcible entry had been made. Galesburg Police K9 responded to the scene and conducted a K9 track for the subject that had fled on foot. Officers tracked the subject to the area of Casey’s General Store, 2364 N. Seminary Street, where he was taken into custody.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as:
Byron A. Williams
Age 27

The subject that fled on foot was identified as:
Jameel G. Hughes
Age 27

Byron Williams was charged with the following:
Burglary, Theft Over $500.00, Criminal Damage Over $500.00, Aggravated Battery Peace Officer, Aggravated Assault Peace Officer, Aggravated Reckless Driving, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding along with various other traffic related charges.

Jameel Hughes was charged with the following:
Burglary, Theft Over $500.00, Criminal Damage Over $500.00

This incident is still under investigation with the possibility of additional charges being added.
