MOLINE – Monmouth-Roseville High School senior Andrew Gunn is one of five Illinois students nominated for admission to United States Service Academies by U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos for the class entering in the fall of 2022.

Andrew has participated in football, baseball, and wrestling, and has been a band member since the fifth grade. His favorite subjects in school are math and history.

Outside of school Andrew likes to spend time at his church and youth group, as well as umpiring baseball games. He follows the words of 1985 Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson, who said: “Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there.”

Andrew’s goal is to gain entrance to the Air Force Academy.

“Most importantly, I want to serve my country to the best of my abilities, and use what God has given me in the best way possible,” Andrew wrote in his nomination letter. “I want to fly planes, as it is the most exhilarating career path I can imagine. And I want to do something that will be a real challenge, something that I can be very proud of for the rest of my life.”

Andrew is the son of Ian and Katy Gunn.

Congresswoman Bustos has the honor of nominating qualified young people from Illinois’ 17th Congressional District for attendance at four service academies: the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.

Nominees must now be accepted by the academies to gain admittance.

“Our servicemembers make the United States the greatest nation in the world,” Congresswoman Bustos said. “These five academy nominees will commit themselves to working hard and serving our country honorably, and I wish them the best of luck as they embark on their journey.”

The full list of students nominated by Representative Bustos is as follows:

United States Military Academy: Charlie Farmer, U.S. Military Preparatory School, from Coal Valley; Storm Stern, Illinois Math and Science Academy, from Rock Island.

United States Naval Academy: Chase Everingham, Northern High School, from Taylor Ridge.

United States Air Force Academy: Andrew Gunn, Monmouth-Roseville High School, from Monmouth; Lea Kendall, Georgia Military College, from Andalusia.
