ISBE Announces $17 Million Grant to Create Freedom Schools in IL

Share

The Illinois State Board of Education is announcing a 17-million-dollar grant to create a network of Freedom Schools. The goal is to have schools and community organizations team up to establish Freedom Schools, presenting a multicultural curriculum for struggling and low-income students says the board’s Cara Wiley.

“They can operate either out of school time programs through the week or during the summer. Really what we are trying to do is to get them to really focus on their own heritage and really focus on their ethnicity to learn a little bit about their culture.”

The schools will also focus on any learning loss during the pandemic. This will be the nation’s first state-funded Freedom School’s network.
