Monmouth College Softball Walked Off in Spring Break Opener, Game Two Canceled

The Monmouth College softball team lost their first game of the Spring Break trip, in a battle of Fighting Scots by the score of 6-5 on Sunday. The Scots (0-3) were walked off by Gordon College and a scheduled afternoon game against Dominican University was canceled due to lack of umpires.

The game was scoreless into the third when MyKenzie Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) led off with a single for Monmouth She moved to second on a a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third when Jessica Pauley (Moline, Illinois) singled. Olivia Riddley (Chatham, Illinois) reached on a fielder’s choice as Kloess scored for a 1-0 lead.

Gordon tied the game against Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois) in the bottom of the inning. The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth. Gordon took a 2-1 lead on three straight one-out singles before Jenna Pauley (Moline, Illinois) took over on the mound for Leber. Gordon scored two more runs in the inning with a wild pitch and two hits as they took a 4-1 lead.

Jessica Pauley doubled to start the sixth and an error gave Monmouth two base runners. Caliista Warmowski (Spring Grove, Illinois) singled to load the bases and Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) doubled to right-center, tying the game 4-4 as all three runners scored.

Monmouth took the lead in the top of the seventh. Kloess walked and with one out, Jessica Pauley singled to put runners on the corners. Kloess scored the go-ahead run on a groundout as Monmouth took a 5-4 lead.

Gordon started the bottom of the seventh with a single and a fielder’s choice. They eventually had runners at second and third with two outs when a single to right field won the game 6-5.
