Thursday was a long and soggy day for the Monmouth College softball team in Florida but it resulted in the first win of the season, 3-1 over Lakeland. The Scots (1-6) were originally scheduled to play Husson at 2:15 p.m. and Lakeland at 4:15 p.m. but ran changed the entire day schedule. The Husson game was canceled and the Scots started against Lakeland at 6:59 p.m. ET.
Lakeland took the lead in the second inning against Abby Leber (Tremont, Illinois). Monmouth got on the board an inning later. Calista Warmowski (Spring Grove, Illinois) and Madelyn Belville (Rushville, Illinois) both singled and a pair of wild pitches plated a run to tie the game.
The Scots took the lead with another two-out run in the fourth. Lillian Hucke (Monmouth, Illinois) started the rally with a walk and Leber singled. Addison Riley (Illinois City, Illinois) gave the Scots a 2-1 lead with a single.
Monmouth added on against a Lakeland reliever in the fifth. Warmowski led off with a walk and after two outs, MyKenize Kloess (Dupo, Illinois) drew a walk. Olivia Riddley (Chatham, Illinois) singled home Warmowski for a 3-1 lead and Leber shut down the Muksies from there.
Leber (1-2) allowed one run on four hits in the complete game win. She walked one and struck out a season-high nine.
The Scots are scheduled to play twice on Friday. They will face Marywood at 8:15 a.m. CT and Simmons University at 12:30 p.m.
