CANTON, Missouri – The Prairie Fire track and field teams competed at the Culver-Stockton Wildcat Open on Saturday.
The meet was highlighted with a performance from Derrick Jackson, winning the 100m in a time of 10.17 seconds. Not only is this a huge PR, but a Knox record and Division III record. The Division III record stood for 39 years.
“I can’t even put In words about what just happened today,” said Jackson. “The moment they shot the gun and I finally got the start I’ve been working on I knew it was some heat, but 10.17 woahhhh. And we can’t forget about the coach who pushes me every single day to be better then I was yesterday. We are better than Batman and Robin.”
“It was great to see Derrick drop this time,” said head coach Evander Wells. “Based on what he’s done at practice, I knew he’s we capable of it, we just needed the right race to do so. It’s great to see all the work we’re putting in pay off!”
Derrick was not the only record of the day, Charles Broomfield also broke his own hammer throw record. His heave of 49.33 was good for second place.
Tyrell Pierce placed first in the men’s 200m (21.71) and 400m (48.47). He finished fourth in the 100m (10.75).
Darnell Centeno earned fourth place in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 11.46m.
Saxon Alvarez finished in second place in the women’s 1500m (5:36.42). Autumn Crow finished third (5:39.02).
Sophie Elstone placed fourth in the women’s 800m with a time of 2:43.09.
Tara Irani earned a third place finish in the women’s 400m hurdles (1:26.16).
“We also have several other athletes improve their positions on the Knox top 10 list,” added Wells.
Peyton Balfour moved into second on the Knox top-10 list in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 10.80m. She finished fourth in both the triple jump and long jump (4.79m).
Ethan Sena moved into seventh in the men’s pole vault, clearing 3.95m for third place.
Broomfield also moved into third in the men’s shot put with a toss of 14.62m. He placed third in the meet.
Caroline Wolters moved into ninth place in the women’s pole vault, clearing 2.15m.
“Today was a great day for Knox Track and Field,” concluded Wells. “We continue to see everyone improve with several athletes having PR‘s in their events. We concluded the day with a total of 26 PRs. It’s great to see everyone continuing to improve each week. We had near perfect conditions and everybody took advantage.”
Knox returns to action on April 29 and 30 as they travel to the Drake Relays.
