Janet Gail Martin-Griffith, 87, of Galesburg, went home to be with her Lord at 11:03 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at home surrounded by family.
She was born September 3, 1934, in Galesburg, the daughter of Walter E. and Helen (Lindgren) Carlson. She married Jack Martin in 1953. She later married Harold Griffith on November 27, 2004, in Galesburg.
She is survived by her husband, Harold; five children, Mike (Karen) Martin, Cheryl (Don) Labertew, Lisa Martin, Mark (Ann) Martin, and Chris (Keith) Hanna; three step-sons, Tom (Debbie) Griffith, Jeff (Ann Marie) Griffith, and John (Debbie) Griffith; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a sister, Lois Malcolm; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Jack Martin; a daughter, Cathy Martin Russell; two brothers, Donald Carlson and Pastor John Carlson; and two sisters, Caryl Poland and Barbara Carlson.
Janet was raised in Galesburg, where she graduated from Galesburg High School in 1952. She attended the Open Bible College from 1952 to 1953. After earning her associate’s degree from Carl Sandburg College in 1980, Janet worked as an LPN for 16 years at Galesburg Cottage Hospital before retiring in 1996.
Janet was a faithful Christian who was currently a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She served her church and community in numerous ways.
Janet loved her family dearly. She especially enjoyed having everyone together for holidays, birthdays, and family picnics. Some of her other favorites include her kitty, Bella, traveling, reading, walking, and sharing a cup of coffee with friends.
Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday, April 15, 2022 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will follow at noon with Rev. Lee Johnson officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Baptist Church or the Galesburg Rescue Mission.
