Donohoo nets Saturday hat trick
The Monmouth College lacrosse team had an early lead at home on Saturday but allowed the final six goals of the game in a 10-5 Midwest Lacrosse Conference loss to the University of Northwestern (MN). The Scots (5-5, 1-2) led 3-0 after the first quarter and held a 5-4 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.
Kain Donohoo (St. Charles, Illinois) got the Scots off to a great start with two goals in the first eight minutes of action. He scored on an assist from Michael Casey (Chicago, Illinois) at the 12:50 mark and scored on an assist from LH Bond (Fishers, Indiana) at the 7:09 mark. Less than a minute later, Bond made it 3-0 on an assist from Liam Meyer (Cedarburg, Wisconsin).
The Eagles scored all three goals in the second quarter to tie the game and they grabbed the first goal of the second half as well. That goal came with 11:41 to play in the quarter for a 4-3 UNW lead.
Donohoo flew in front of the goal from the left wing to tie the game 4-4 at the 8:52 mark, ending a nearly two full quarter scoreless drought for the Scots. Jeff Knapp (Nolensville, Tennessee) broke the Scots single-season goals record with his 32nd of the season with just 11.3 seconds to go in the quarter. The goal, off an assist from Donohoo, put the Scots on top 5-4.
Northwestern peppered goalie Teagan Simons (Littleton, Colorado) with shots after shot in the fourth quarter. They tied the game just 39 seconds in the period and took the lead with 9:21 to play. The Eagles scored again with 7:44 to go and added two more over the next four minutes to go on top 9-5. The final goal came in a man-up situation for UNW as they scored with 1:49 left.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Knapp has the all-time record with 32 goals in a season and is also third on the list with his 30 goals from last year……Cranford scored 31 goals in 15 games in 2019…….Donohoo is second on the single-season points list with 43, 10 behind Cranford’s record from 2019…….With three goals on Saturday, Donohoo has 31 on the season, one behind Knapp’s record……..Gordon Kiesgen (Spring Grove, Illinois) was 16-for-17 in faceoffs and now has a career-high 140 faceoff wins and a career-high 81 ground balls for a season………Both rank second on the Scots single-season list……….The Scots were called for 10 penalties, totaling 9:30 while UNW had two penalties totaling 1:00………Simons made 25 saves, one off his career high……….Monmouth plays at Dubuque with a 5 p.m. start on Wednesday.
