Norma L. Mettler

Norma L. Mettler, age 87, of Monmouth, Illinois passed away at 4:55 am
on Wednesday April 20, 2022 at Seminary Manor Nursing Home of Galesburg,
Illinois. Norma was born on July 8, 1934 in Monmouth and is the daughter
of  J. Merle and Erma E. Payne Melvin. She was raised in Monmouth where
she attended local schools and graduated in 1953 from Monmouth High
School. After graduation Norma did go on and earn a few college credits.
Norma married Vernon L. Mettler Jr on November 29, 1953 in Monmouth, and
he preceded her in death on November 30, 2020. Norma first worked for
General Telephone Company in Monmouth where she was both a local and
long distance operator. She then began work and was a teacher at
Monmouth Early Learning Center from its inception in 1970 to her
retirement in 2001. Over the course of her career it is estimated that
she taught over 1600 students at MELC.  Norma enjoyed the many vacation
trips with her family or friends. She was blessed with two sons, five
grandchildren and six great grandchildren with her seventh due in
October. She followed them in many years of their sport activities. They
were her pride and joy, as she was always sharing pictures and cute
sayings. Norma has been a lifelong and active member of Faith United
Presbyterian Church in Monmouth. She is survived by her two sons, Craig
Mettler and Kittie of Davenport, Iowa and Chris Mettler  and Christine
of Metamora, Illinois. There are five grandchildren, Lindsay and Jared
Johnson of El Paso, IL; Kittie R. and Luke Kjormoe of Dyke, Iowa, Alexis
and Brian Dykstra of Davenport, Iowa; Matthew Mettler of Peoria, IL; and
Alex and Mallory Mettler of Milwaukee, WI, six great grandchildren and
one on the way. She is survived by her sister, Judy Owens of Warsaw,
Indiana and her sister in law, Dixie Wells of Monmouth, Illinois. Norma
is preceded in her death by her parents, husband, Vernon Jr, three
brothers, Billy G. Melvin, infant Gary C. Melvin, and Robert Melvin.

A memorial service for Norma L. Mettler is being planned on Saturday
April 30, 2022 at 11:00 am at Faith United Presbyterian Church of
Monmouth. Her family plans visitation at the church and will receive
friends from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at Faith Church prior to the memorial
service. A fellowship for all is planned following the memorial service
in the social hall of Faith Church. Norma’s ashes, along with Vernon,s
will be privately interred by her family, prior to the announced
visitation and service plans. Memorial funds are being established for
either Faith United Presbyterian Church or educational materials for
Monmouth Early Learning Center. Feel free to leave a remembrance of
