A New State Law Makes It Easier for Victims of Domestic Violence to File for an Order of Protection

Share

A new state law will make it easier for survivors of domestic violence to file an order of protection. The law provides survivors of sexual or domestic abuse the option of filing online. It was supported by Amanda Pyron, Executive Director of the network: Advocating Against Domestic Violence. She says some counties have already adopted this practice in response to the pandemic.

“The court systems in the state who are able to really pivot really quickly to remote access, were hugely impactful in the lives of survivors. I am so happy that this law was passed and signed because what it means is that the innovations and the great processes that were established will be available to more survivors statewide.”

The law also requires larger counties in Illinois to offer survivors to attend hearings remotely.
